Dr. Hans Årebäck, Senior Project Manager, Boliden Mines (Sweden)

"Hans Årebäck Senior Project Manager for Boliden Mines. Educated in mineralogy and petrology at Göteborg University, graduated in 1992 and received a Ph.D in 2001. Hans started his career in Saudi-Arabia in 1994 as a site geologist on a rock cavern project for ABV Rock Group. He then moved on to the "famous" Hallandsås tunnel project in Sweden. In 1997 he started as an exploration geologist for Boliden and have since then worked with near-mine exploration, field exploration, resource estimation and project management in the field of VMS-, gold- and Cu-porphyry type deposits. From mid 2009 to September 2013 Hans was the Exploration Director for Boliden Mines."

Risto Pietilä

Risto Pietilä, Regional Director, Geological Survey of Finland

"Risto Pietilä graduated from University of Oulu in geophysics (M.Sc) 1979. He has had a long career in 1983 - 2004 at Outokumpu Mining Oy both in domestic and international exploration and mining projects. In 2004 he joined Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) Northern Finland Office where he started as a Division Manager of Bedrock and Raw materials. From 2005 on he has held the position of Regional Director of GTK's Northern Finland Office. Risto Pietilä was nominated as a Regional Director of GTK's Eastern Finland Office, Kuopio from the 1st of October in 2011."

Louise Grondin

Louise Grondin, Senior Vice-President Environment and Sustainable Development, Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd (Canada)

"Ms. Grondin is Senior Vice-President, Environment and Sustainable Development of Agnico-Eagle. She has held this position since December 2010. Since joining the company in 2001, she was, successively, Environmental Manager for the LaRonde Division, Regional Environmental Manager for Abitibi and Vice-president Environment. Prior to that, Ms. Grondin was environmental superintendent for the Selbaie mine where she worked from 1993 to 2001. She also worked for 12 years in various capacities with Ontario Hydro in Toronto. Ms. Grondin holds a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Ottawa (1978) and an M.Sc. in Meteorology from McGill University (1980). She completed the mechanical engineering curriculum at the University of Toronto in 1984 and has been a member of OIQ in Quebec since 2001, and PEO in Ontario since 1984." 

Andrew Reid

Kevitsa Low Grade Disseminated Poly Metallic Deposit
Andrew Reid, CEO, First Quantum Minerals Ltd (Finland)

"Andrew graduated from the University of Wollongong near Sydney in 1992 with an honours degree in Geology. He has subsequently attained a postgraduate degree in Mining Engineering and a Master's Degree in Mineral Economics. He commenced work in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia where he travelled extensively working on Gold, Iron Ore, Nickel and Silver projects.

From 2003 to 2007 he worked at the SMD Lero Gold Mine in West Africa, first as a Senior Mining Engineer, then as Chief Geologist, expanding the Mine from 1Mtpa heap leach to 7Mtpa CIL. 2007 till 2012 was spent living and working in Namibia, starting up both the Langer Heinrich and Kayelekera Uranium Mines for Paladin Energy as the Mining Manager. Since early 2012 he has been living in Northern Finland, where he started up the polymetallic Kevitsa Mine." 

Eeva Ruokonen

Talvivaara Mine - Challenges and Possibilities in Responsibility

"Eeva Ruokonen, M.Sc. (mining) and Lic.Tech. (mineral processing), has a wide experience within mining, mineral processing and metallurgical industry as well as in industrial maintenance service business.

Eeva is the Chief Sustainability Officer member of the Executive Committee. She joined the Talvivaara Mining Company 2/2010. Prior to joining Talvivaara she worked for ABB Oy Service as Vice President - HSE (2007 - 2009), Boliden Ab as global Vice President - QHSE (2006 - 2007), Boliden's zinc smelter in Kokkola as General Manager - administration (2005 - 2006) and copper/nickel smelters in Harjavalta as Vice President HSE (1999 - 2005). During 1991 - 1999 she worked for Outokumpu-company at Kemi chromium mine in operational and process development positions."

Markus Ekberg

Erkki Vanhanen

Keynote: Exploring in Finland: How it Really Works?
Dr. Erkki Vanhanen, Exploration Manager Scandinavia, Mawson Oy (Finland)

"Erkki Vanhanen graduated from the University of Oulu in 1981. He commenced work for the Geological Survey of Finland in 1982 and spent 10 years searching for gold, uranium and massive sulphides. From 1993 to 2003 he acted as Exploration and Division Manager for GTK's bedrock mapping, geological investigation and mineral exploration in North Finland.

After a short period from 2004 - 2007 as Municipal Manager in the Puolanka municipality, he continued his exploration career as a geologist and Technical Director for AREVA Resources Finland. In 2010 he joined Mawson Resources Ltd as Exploration Manager for Scandinavia. In 2001 he finished his doctoral thesis from the Fe-Co-Au-U deposits in the Paleoproterozoic Kuusamo Schist Belt and gained the title of European Geologist (EurGeol) in 2009." 

David Pym

"David Pym - President, Chief Executive Officer, B.Sc. in Geology, 1990, Australia. David is a Geologist with over 20 years of international experience in the mining industry, with roles ranging from Field hand to his current role as President and CEO of a Mining Company . He took over management of the company in 2006 and with a new management team oversaw the transition of Belvedere from a junior exploration play to a developing mining company with Nickel and Gold assets." 

Urpo Kuronen

FinnAust Mining Plc - High Impact Exploration?

"Urpo Kuronen has been CEO of FinnAust Mining Plc since October 2011. He is a geologist with over 30 year experience within the resource sector, predominantly in exploration, in a range of commodities. Prior to joining FinnAust Mining he held a position of Manager - Geology in Polar Mining Oy, a Finnish subsidiary of Dragon Mining. In the beginning of his work career he worked for 25 years for the Outokumpu Group in positions from Project Geologist to Exploration Manager both in Finland and in Australia. Over the ten year period in Australia he was mainly seconded for three Australian exploration and mining companies - Pancontinental Mining Ltd, Mining Project Investors Pty Ltd and Sipa Resources Ltd.

Urpo was graduated from the University of Turku (MSc). He is a Member of the Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (AusIMM), Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (ASEG), Finnish Association of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers (VMY) and the Geological Society of Finland (SGS)."

"M.Sc. (Econ.) from Åbo Akademi University in Turku, Finland. Vice President, Metals & Mining Division in Nordkalk Corporation. The Metals&Mining Division is responsible for production and sales mainly to the steel and mining customers within the Nordkalk Group. Anders Mattsson is also the Managing Director for Nordkalk AB in Sweden. He has worked for Nordkalk since 1997."

"Mr. Haga joined Agnico Eagle as Managing Director, Europe, in March 2006 and was appointed Vice-President, Europe, in July 2006. He has held various executive and corporate positions with the Outokumpu Group in Finland and Canada. Prior to joining Agnico Eagle, Mr. Haga was President of Polar Mining Oy, a Finnish subsidiary of Dragon Mining NL of Australia. Mr. Haga is a graduate of Åbo Akademi, Finland (M.Sc.)."

"Vesa Nykänen is Manager of Bedrock Geology and Resources division at the Geological Survey of Finland, Rovaniemi. His research interests include spatial data analysis and geological 3D modelling with special emphasis on mineral exploration. His Ph.D. thesis in 2008 was titled ‘Spatial data analysis as a tool for mineral prospectivity mapping'." 

Paul Semple

Keynote: Noront's Eagle's Nest Mine Development

"Mr. Semple's 28 year career in the mining industry has focused on feasibility studies, project development and operations of precious and base metals deposits. Much of his time was spent with Kilborn (later SNC-Lavalin) where he was involved in all aspects of global project development from initial studies through to construction and operations. During this time, Mr. Semple held various positions including Vice President and General Manager, SNC Lavalin Engineers and Constructors.

Recently, Mr. Semple was Vice President of Projects for Western Goldfields Inc, and was responsible for the feasibility study and engineering/construction required to restart the Mesquite Mine. Mr. Semple holds a Bachelor of Applied Science from Queen's University and is a Professional Engineer." 

Teija Kankaanpää

Siilinjärvi Phosphate Mine - Fourth Decade Ongoing

"Ms. Kankaanpää is since 2010 responsible for Yara's phosphate mine operations including open pits and the mill in Siilinjärvi, Finland. She has held several positions in production, sales and business development in the fertilizer and industrial chemicals business. Ms. Kankaanpää holds a M.Sc. in chemical engineering from the Helsinki University of Technology, Finland."

Alistair Cowden

Altona's Outokumpu Project; Production and Beyond

"Alistair Cowden is the Managing Director of Altona and was instrumental in acquiring and financing the Outokumpu Project. Alistair has successfully managed a number of Australian listed mining companies over the last 17 years. He has a Geology degree from the University of Edinburgh and a PhD in Geology from the University of London. Alistair has been active in Finland for almost 10 years and regards Finland as one of the best places to be a miner." 

Tracey Kerr

"Tracey Kerr graduated from the University of Sydney in 1986 with a B.Sc Hons degree; she also has a Masters from CODES. In 1987 she commenced work with BHP Minerals Exploration in Australia.Tracey worked for BHP for 18 years, based in Australia, UK and Canada From 2001 to 2005 she worked in BHPB's global iron ore exploration team, prior to becoming Global Iron Ore Commodity Specialist for BHPB Mineral Exploration.

In late 2005 Tracey joined Vale in Australia as a Technical Coordinator for the Australasian region, responsible for project generation. In 2007 she became General Manager of Technical Services. In July 2008 she was became Director, Exploration - Americas for Vale. In August 2011 Tracey joined Anglo American as Group Head of Exploration, based in London, UK." 

Timo Lindborg

Challenges of Investing in Junior Mining Companies and Sotkamo Silver

"Dr. Timo Lindborg has his Doctor's degree in Industrial Economics. Lindborg took his Masters of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Oulu in 1988. He is B.Sc. in Quaternary Geology and Geology at the University of Uppsala, 1982.

Dr. Lindborg has worked with mining related issues since 1981. Lindborg is CEO for the Sotkamo Silver AB. He has established and built up Sotkamo Silver AB. Before Sotkamo Silver, Dr. Lindborg acted as CEO of Endomines AB. He was even one of the founding entrepreneurs of Endomines, one of the first junior mining companies in Finland. He has a long experience about gathering financing, developing and managing exploration and mining projects in Nordic countries."

Henning Holmström

"Henning Holmström is a mining engineer (M.Sc. in Geotechnology) and has a Ph.D. in Applied Geology from Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. Henning has in the past been employed by Envipro Miljöteknik AB and the Swedish Geological Survey (SGU) as well as Golder Associates.

Presently Henning is the managing director of Tasman Metals AB, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tasman Metals Ltd. Henning is also a director of Woxna Graphite AB. He is a member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) and the Swedish Geotechnical Society (SGF) as well as the International Mine Water Association (IMWA)."
